Glossary

Every SandDune term in a few sentences — what it means and where to learn more.

All documentation articles

Note — one photographed page of your handwriting plus everything attached to it: the transcription, title, date written, notebooks, and star. The note is SandDune's basic unit. A physical page becomes one note.

Transcription — the editable digital text SandDune reads from your handwriting. It's canonical: your edits to it are final, and search, Ask, and exports all use it. See Transcription.

Date Written — the day you wrote the page (not the day you uploaded it). The calendar, streaks, and statistics are all built on this date, which is why backfilling old pages works cleanly.

Live Highlights — line-level links between your handwriting and its transcription. In highlight mode, each written line glows; tapping one shows its text with copy and edit actions. See Live Highlights.

Search — literal keyword lookup across note titles and transcriptions. Free and unlimited. See Search.

Ask — plain-language questions answered from your own pages, with citations. Uses your monthly Ask allowance. See Ask.

Citation — the link inside an Ask or Timeline answer pointing to the exact note the statement came from. Citations are the receipts; tap one to see the original page.

Timeline — a saved question you re-ask over time. See Timelines.

Node — one dated answer on a Timeline. Each node is generated fresh from your notes, never from previous nodes.

Notebook — a named collection of notes. Notes can belong to many notebooks; deleting a notebook never deletes its notes. See Notebooks.

Star — a favorite flag on a note, with a dashboard filter to show only starred notes. See Stars.

Monthly Artifact — the shareable summary image generated for each finished month: a calendar collage of your pages plus that month's stats. See Monthly Artifacts.

Writing day — a calendar day (by date written) with at least one page.

Streak — consecutive writing days, still alive if you wrote today or yesterday.

Transcription unit / Ask unit — the two monthly allowances that come with your plan (3, 30, or 100 of each). One page transcribed = one transcription unit; one question or Timeline node = one Ask unit. See Usage limits.
